Doctor's orders

Handmade pieces last for generations with a little care. Follow these directions and your prescription will shine as long as you wear it.

For: gold

Gold

  • Wash in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Scrub gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
  • Keep it away from chlorine and harsh cleaners. Take it off before pools and hot tubs.
  • Store each piece on its own in a soft pouch so it doesn't scratch.
For: silver

Silver

  • Wear it often. Silver tarnishes when it sits in the air; regular wear keeps it bright.
  • Buff with a silver polishing cloth when it starts to darken.
  • Store it in a sealed or anti-tarnish bag. Last on, first off: put it on after lotion, perfume and hairspray.
For: gemstones

Gemstones

  • Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry right away.
  • Softer and porous stones (opal, pearl, emerald, turquoise) don't go in ultrasonic or steam cleaners, and shouldn't soak.
  • Avoid hard knocks and high heat. Ask the doctor what your stone can handle.
For: chains

Chains

  • Unclasp to take it off. Never pull a chain over your head or yank it free.
  • Fasten the clasp before you put it away, then hang it or lay it flat so it can't kink or tangle.
  • Check the clasp now and then. If it feels loose, book a follow-up.
From your PT

Training day

  • Take heavy chains off for heavy lifts, contact sports and sleep.
  • Take rings off for barbell work, pull-ups and anything with grip. Your fingers and your ring will thank you.
  • Rinse off sweat afterward and dry before storing.
